RUJIGAKU

The 3 chiefs Master Morisato Takushi was sent on a Ryukyuan mission to China during the Ming Dynasty in 1522 and brought back instruments and court music. For official events within Shuri Castle and when the Ryukyu King left the castle or when the Ryukyu King went up to Edo, Rujigaku was played as ‘Dochuraku’ marching music. Rujigaku has been recognized as an ‘intangible cultural property’ by the Okinawa prefecture.

UZAGAKU

If Rujigaku is considered marching music for the outdoors, Uzagaku would be considered the indoor music ensemble. For visiting mission receptions and when Ryukyu delegates went to Edo, ‘Gakudoji,’ a group of 15-16 teenage males wearing beautiful attire played music within the Edo Castle grounds and Satsuma grounds. Since the fall of the Ryukyu Kingdom and not being passed down over the years, it is considered the lost music of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
